  • Mr Sivachandran  ·

We believe the key to success is through team work. With an efficient and trained team of more than 40 staffs, we have the capability to execute complex customized works and yet, at the same time, we are able to pay attention to our customer's small requirement as well.   Our strength lies in our trained & self-motivated employees, our competitiveness, our readiness and commitment to serving our customers

Saying,“I have a burning passion to serve the sick, especially, the aged and those challenged in various ways, and in pain, by providing them with medical and nursing care at very reasonable and affordable prices,” the 30-year old Mr Sivachandran, a locally trained nurse, went on to help nearly 10,000 patients - from three months to 90 years old. Today the nursing company he founded officially on 4th April 2008, named after Abella, his daughter and pioneered with an initial $800 investment, owns four ambulances. And employs eight full-time and over 20 part-timers, all licensed nurses.

Its numerous services provided include the following : first aid standby for events; sales of medical equipment;rental of home-use oxygen cylinders;home nursing care and services like feeding tube insertion; 24-hour emergency and non-emergency ambulance & non-ambulance services; and world-wide air ambulance & medical evacuation. “You can rely on us for providing the highest level of customer service,” said Sivachandran who also outsources some of his part-time nurses for floor duties at Mount Alvernia Hospital. “We just set up our own 1000 sq ft Training Centre at 29 Mandai Estate with instructors qualified to teach Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) procedures.”

The holder of a two-year Certificate in Nursing from the Simei ITE is 110% hands-on at Abella Agency in driving ambulances, providing home nursing care and medically evacuating patients to countries like Spain, China, Philippines and Bangladesh. He also takes charge of marketing, for growing the business. In this regard, he regularly liaises with some 30 doctors of government and private hospitals (“my personal friends”), even going offshore fishing with many of them regularly. While Devendran, his elder brother, takes care of his nursing company's operations, Sri Valey, his mother does the accounts.

All this is a far cry from the early situation when during the first eight months of his company, Sivachandran who came from a very poor family, worked alone.“I travelled around in my specially equipped mini-car bought for me by my wife Yamuna, providing wound care management; bathing of bed or wheelchair-bound patients; feeding of Nasogastric tube (NGT) patients; and doing other nursing services,” explained the Nurse Director, now owning two BMWs 3 series and 7 series. And looking forward soon to a Lamborghini.

Apart from letters of gratitude from individual patients, Abella Agency has also received trophies and commendations from various organisations for providing medical standbys during events. These include MediaCorp (filming); Keppel Marine (X-Country Run); Singapore Youth Olympic Games (Opening Ceremony); People’s Association (Water Venture – National 5 Dragon Boat Racing);Integrated Resort at Sentosa (Water Testing Event); and Yishun Safra (Rock Climbing).

“Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, the Minister for the Environment and Water Resources last year presented me with a plaque on stage from the Ruppini’s Breast Cancer Walk For sponsorship. We sponsored ambulances and nurses during its Pink Ribbon Walk for breast cancer patients, Safra Rock on events and more” said an elated Sivachandran, treasuring the awards.

The Way Ahead

“We are working very hard towards realizing our Big Dream of eventually setting up our very own Dialysis Center and a small Nursing Home. Besides increasing our ambulances over the next few years, now five in total operation,” he said. “We are also keen to set up our own Nursing Home.”

Due to the ageing population providing a growing market everywhere, Abella Agency plans to expand. “But our focus will always be on attracting the younger people to our line of work, especially, those with dedication and a basic nursing qualification. We will provide them training to improve their professionalism and earning opportunities in meaningful and compassionate work of looking after the medical welfare of fellow Singaporeans.”

“For supporting and motivating me to come this far, I will be eternally grateful to : Yamuna (loving wife);Mdm Sri Valey (beloved mother);Mr Pannerselvam (wonderful dad); Mr Jonathan Lee, fellow entrepreneur and my best friend for 25 years since studying in the same kindergarten; and Professor See Ju Yaw, another close friend and mentor.”
