Current Situation

Incorporated in February 1990 with the Mission to ‘Make available affordable, applicable the best IT tools for business, government and home users,’ the 22-year old JK Technology was founded as a Singapore-based IT solutions centre. Its business is broadly classified as follows: (1) supply and delivery of IT software and hardware (2) systems integration (SI) and services to corporates and government /government-related organizations and (3) short-term rental of IT equipment. JK Technology has enjoyed much success in partnering major vendors like Lenovo, Hewlett Packard, Canon, Samsung, Cisco Systems, IBM, Acer, Adobe and Microsoft, and consistently winning awards from them. At 31st March last year, with short-term IT rental business as its key growth area, the company’s sales turnover shot up to $19.8m - from $13m the previous year.

“I adapt fast to situations, decide on-the-spot, lead by example and never give up,” said Mr Eugene Ang, 51, its MD & founder. “We are now more realistic, more focused and more selective of contracts with a healthy margin,” said Eugene who had to forego his company’s first public-listing in March 2003 – through a reverse takeover by St James Holdings in August 2008.

“Growing too fast while focusing on the topline revenue, contracts having a razor-thin margin affected our bottom-line badly.” Much wiser, on 14 November last year, JK Technology listed on SGX-Catalist for a second time - for a higher profile, better creditability, new business and retaining and attracting talents.

Challenges successfully faced

“Except for three crises, we experienced generally good years. The third in 2008 was the worst, a global financial crisis coinciding with our company’s reverse takeover. I used all my experience to turn the business around. Many tough decisions had to be made, including cutting staff, freezing of salaries and implementing tight control over expenses,” said Eugene.

Today, with its recent public listing, JK Technology is in the pink of health. “We have a fantastic team of staff now, many of whom have worked relentless to turn our Company around. We will leverage on our status as a public-listed Company to work with our partners to tap the many opportunities available in the IT industry” added Eugene.

Competitive Strengths

Outlining JK Technology’s competitive strengths, he said, “We believe that a happy and motivated set of employees will result in a group of satisfied customers. We try to create an environment of trust, continuous learning and improvement, self-motivation together with a comfortable working environment. We treat our customers as friends and through these friendships, we have gained many loyal and long-term customers.”

“To give our customers the best possible services, we have to be in the forefront of technological developments. And so invest in the latest area of training for our employees and, where appropriate, implement them also for our clients. We constantly review and address the specific needs of our employees and clients. And take appropriate steps to improve the relationships.”

Plans

The IT Systems Integrator cum One-Stop IT Solutions Centre now plans to be a leading local IT player and the preferred IT partner for local corporates. “We set up IT infrastructures for companies by supplying various Systems Integration and Services, maintaining the network and outsourcing, while providing temporary manpower from our pool of 76 staff, largely IT Engineers, all trained in computer hardware and software.”

“Our short-term IT rental business is our key growth area contributing to our turnaround, since February 2009. We entered this business as many companies prefer to rent notebooks and PCs in view of their short life cycles.” Short-term rental demand for IT equipment also comes from Singapore’s MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) market. “We are now also tapping this sector including hotels for our future growth,” Eugene said.

“No short-cut to success. Success is all about hard work and perseverance. The harder you work, the luckier you become.”
