Three young individuals from different academic disciplines had one dream. And through perseverance and determination, that very dream is now fast becoming a reality, in the form of an events-management firm well on its way to becoming an integrated marketing communications firm. This is the success story of the decade-old ISO 9001, 14001 and 18001-accredited Summer Productions. The first homegrown events local company to be awarded the BizSAFE STAR, the highest industrial accolade for safety standards, it was founded and fuelled by the passion of three enterprising Singaporeans, Messrs Alvin Koh, Edward Tan and Charles Loh in 2002. These accolades reflect Summer Productions' fast-growing portfolio, local and international. While making waves in the Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Europe and China, back home in Singapore, Summer Productions has also been quietly involved behind-the-scenes in many first-of-its-kind commercially important projects and national events.

“Outside Singapore, we imported our expertise to the Middle East making headlines on Al Jazeera, CNBC Arabia and The National newspaper for the projects we undertook there, notably building a mega-scale futuristic booth encompassing a 4-D theatre,” said Charles Loh. “One of our many technological innovations for showcasing the Abu Dhabi government’s Vision for Development in the Emirate to 2030.” This was for the annual Cityscape Global in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. “Cityscape Global is one of the world’s largest and most important real estate networking and conference events,” said Alvin, adding “It has witnessed the participation and involvement of the movers and shakers in the global real-estate industry.”

Locally, since 2010, Summer Productions has been at the helm of many Conventions for which it has lent its expertise to the construction of exhibition structures and multi-touch interactions to events including the SingTel Singapore Grand Prix Formula One Race (since 2006); Samsung Skydiving Festival (2004); and Samsung Human Torch involving 2,010 participants at the Singapore Youth Olympic Games (2010). In late 2011, Summer Productions even showcased American superstar Lady GaGa at the Marina Bay Sands.

“Beyond staging Conventions, we also inject a fun factor to events,” said Edward. These include the first Esprit Vertical Catwalk Asia Tour (2004) and Singtel’s ZoukOut, replete with striking and interactive installations like a 2-storey simulated Yacht and a 20-metre high (about six-storeys) Tribal Tepee on Siloso Beach. This element of fun even extended to the audience on a multi-media platform at CommunicAsia 2010 with SingTel’s and Angry Birds’ Fast & Furious voice activated game at the SingTel Singapore Grand Prix F1 last year.

And while delivering exemplary logistics, looking into appropriate production strategies for a healthy return on investment, through maximum audience engagement. “While coming up with a creative concept for a show or event, we input a ‘WOW’ factor for which the client will be long remembered,” said Edward, adding, “One vital challenge we perennially face is to input the safety factor, which we have done in all our events. Without fail.”


“We need to create an international network and footprint to better support and service our MNC clients in different markets,” envisioned Charles. “Summer Productions will also be moving into China this year, with offices in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Hong Kong,” he added. These are in addition to the offices of the high-flying Summer Productions already in Abu Dhabi and India.
